The Story of Bharathi

Bharathi is a four-year-old girl studying in Lower Kindergarten at the Uddamaari DEC. Bharathi has one brother. She is from a Dalit Hindu background. Her family is poor because her father is unable to work.  He has kidney problems and often has to be admitted to hospital.  Because of her father’s illness, Bharathi and her brother live with their grandmother.  She cares for them the best she can, despite her age and failing health. 

Bharathi began coming to the Uddamaari DEC in June 2006 on a full scholarship.  Her parents and grandmother are thrilled that she is able to study in an English-based school. This is something they never thought would happen for any member of their family. Because Bharathi lives several miles away from the school as an added perk, the school provides a pass which provides public bus transportation for Bharathi every morning. Bharathi and her family are thankful for that.  The Uddamaari DEC staff members are trying to help Bharathi in every way possible, hoping her father recovers from his illness quickly.
