The Story of Gayathri

A girl like GayathriGayathri is a five-year-old girl studying in Upper Kindergarten.  She is from a poor, downtrodden and oppressed community of laundrymen.  Her father washes people’s clothes to earn money, but it is never enough. The family struggles to survive.  In an effort to earn additional income, Gayathri’s father has gone to live for some time in a nearby city, hoping to find work.  He has started doing some manual construction labor.

Gayathri’s mother works as a housekeeper in a few nearby houses.  She brings home a small amount of money which helps to feed the family.  Sadly, in addition to their financial difficulties, Gayathri’s family also suffers emotionally from the loss of Gayathri’s two-year-old brother who died in 2004 from a severe stomach infection. Because of their impoverished condition, the family was not able to give Gayathri’s brother proper medical treatment to keep him alive.  Gayathri’s mother has been in a state of severe depression since this young boy’s death.

The Kalayarkovil staff members have been spending much time with Gayathri and her family.  They offer comfort and counseling, trying to encourage them in their sorrow.  The team members are happy that Gayathri attends school every day and is doing well in her studies.  It seems that when she comes to school, she forgets all the miserable things about her life and is able to have fun with the other children.
