Operation Mercy Charitable Company in India.
Operation Mercy Charitable Company has long seen the challenge of human rights as a key issue in Indian society. In 1988 they set out to correct the enormous travesty of widespread child labour in the matches and fireworks factories of Sivakasi in southern India by setting up a school to give the parents in that area a chance to break the child labour / zero education / lifelong poverty cycle and now are working to see the complete liberation of the Dalit people through a similar strategy creating Dalit Education Centres.
The model of teaching in English, which was begun there, has given OMCC the perfect basis and timing to respond to the Dalits’ request for help to expand their model across India. OM India (the sister organization of OMCC) have an excellent history, giving them a unique readiness to help with such an exciting project. They have been one of the key supporters of the Dalit people over many years and have a proven history and commitment to the Dalit people.
In the past four years OMCC has established 67 schools, mostly in rented buildings. At this point, four schools have actually been given or purchased land and had proper school buildings constructed on the sites. Four complete academic years have been completed, thus giving OMCC an adequate amount of experience in running these specialty schools for the underprivileged and rejected Dalits of India.
OMCC’s sister organisation, OM India has worked in every state in India doing holistic, transformational work. This includes spiritual, emotional, educational and medical work. Some of the activities involve running medical camps, emotional counselling, literacy classes, primary education, literature distribution, advocacy work for other minorities groups, women’s empowerment programs, and health and hygiene awareness seminars. OM India has worked in large metropolitan urban areas and medium-sized towns, as well as small rural villages. OM India’s experience is wide, varied and extensive. |
